Channel Islands Fuel Prices Face Further Increases
Wholesale prices have risen significantly over the past year, with diesel potentially exceeding £2 per litre.
Fuel prices in the Channel Islands are poised for another increase, driven by a substantial rise in wholesale costs over the last 12 months. In Guernsey, unleaded petrol has seen wholesale prices climb by 30 pence per litre, while diesel has surged by 42 pence per litre, according to Dave Beausire, chairman of Le Mont Saint Garage.
Mike Lucas, manager of Vale Garage in Guernsey, noted that recent price hikes were anticipated. He suggested that the States should review fuel duty to mitigate the broader economic impact.
Despite an increase in the number of electric vehicles on Guernsey's roads, many individuals and businesses still rely on petrol and diesel-powered vehicles. This includes essential services like the Guernsey Voluntary Service (GVS), which operates a fleet for its meals on wheels and social club programs. Mandy Le Bachelet, GVS service manager, stated that while the rising costs are not ideal, the organization will continue to prioritize its clients and absorb the additional expense, a strategy previously employed during earlier price fluctuations.
The continued increases could push the price of diesel to over £2 per litre.
