Cartier Owner Richemont in Talks to Join De Beers Acquisition Bid

Cartier owner Richemont is reportedly in discussions to join a consortium seeking to acquire the diamond company De Beers. The Swiss luxury goods conglomerate, which also owns brands like Van Cleef & Arpels and Piaget, is exploring this potential alliance with U.S. jewelry retailer Signet.

De Beers, famous for its 1947 "A Diamond is Forever" advertising slogan and its historical role in establishing a dominant diamond cartel, is currently owned by mining giant Anglo American. Anglo American has been seeking to divest De Beers for several years, citing a decline in demand for natural diamonds as consumers increasingly opt for lab-grown alternatives. The company has already devalued its diamond division and lowered production forecasts this year.

Anglo American holds an 85% stake in De Beers, with the remaining 15% owned by the Government of the Republic of Botswana. The leading bid is from the Global Diamond Consortium, headed by former De Beers CEO Gareth Penny, who led the company from March 2006 to July 2010. This consortium reportedly includes the governments of Angola, Botswana, and Namibia, which would collectively own 49% of De Beers, with private companies holding the remaining stake.

In July, De Beers suspended operations at South Africa's Venetia mine, its largest diamond mine, for two years. This move was attributed to a prolonged decrease in the price of its products and was aimed at cost reduction.
