California Seafood Shack Named Among America's Best Waterfront Eats

Mersea's, a casual seafood restaurant situated on Harford Pier in Avila Beach, California, has been recognized as one of America's best waterfront dining destinations, earning the No. 4 position on Time Out's newly released ranking. The establishment was the only California restaurant to be included in the national top 10.

Time Out lauded Mersea's for its "refreshingly laid-back, come-as-you-are atmosphere," noting that "not every great waterfront restaurant needs white tablecloths or a dress code." Diners can enjoy views of fishing boats, sea otters, and seals from the restaurant's wooden booths.

The menu features unfussy seafood comfort food, with the signature clam chowder, available in New England or Manhattan style and served in a sourdough bread bowl, receiving particular praise. Other popular items include fish tacos, fish and chips, shrimp cocktails, oysters, and crab cakes.

Mersea's, which translates to "Island Oasis" in Old English, is located at 3985 Avila Beach Drive on Harford Pier. The restaurant operates on a first-come, first-served basis and does not take reservations. Live music performances are frequently held, contributing to the restaurant's relaxed ambiance.

The ranking placed Coast in Watch Hill, Rhode Island, at the top spot, followed by Saltus River Grill in Beaufort, South Carolina, and Joia Beach in Miami. Other restaurants on the list included Gigi's in Montauk, New York; Shore Club Chicago; Local Ocean Seafoods in Newport, Oregon; Stars in St. Michaels, Maryland; Mama's Fish House in Paia, Hawaii; and The Saltry in Halibut Cove, Alaska.

This recognition adds to California's growing reputation in the culinary world. The state has seen multiple restaurants achieve national acclaim, including those featured on Robb Report's list of America’s 10 best new restaurants and the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list.
