California Gold Mine Poised for $8 Billion Revival

A historic gold mine in California's Mother Lode region is moving closer to resuming operations, potentially unlocking billions of dollars in gold. Lode Gold Resources Inc., a Canadian mining company, announced it has launched engineering studies at the Fremont Gold Mine in Mariposa County.

The company estimates the mine's deposit contains approximately 1,978,568 ounces of gold, valued at about $8.21 billion based on projected July 2026 prices. According to Lode Gold, only about 8% of the mine's gold has been extracted since its original operation, which began during California's Gold Rush and halted in 1942. This suggests that an estimated 92% of the gold remains untapped beneath the Sierra Nevada foothills.

"The initiation of engineering technical study marks the next stage of technical advancement at Fremont [Gold Mine]," said Wendy T. Chan, CEO and director of Lode Gold. "The objective is to establish a clear technical baseline, identify priority work programs, and support upcoming PFS, engineering, mine planning, and economic studies for the upcoming mine plan development."

Previous operators extracted ore that averaged 10.7 grams of gold per ton when the metal's price was a mere $35 an ounce. The current resurgence of interest is fueled by significantly higher gold prices, which have topped $4,000 an ounce this year.

Lode Gold has not provided a specific timeline for when mining operations could restart but indicated that production is expected to resume in the "near-term." The Fremont project is part of a broader trend of renewed mining activity in California's Mother Lode region, driven by high commodity prices breathed new life into long-dormant deposits.

Mariposa County Supervisor Jennifer Kiser noted the region's historical significance, stating, "We are the gold mining capital of all California; here was the biggest hit across the entire state. In fact, it’s coming back a little." Local residents have expressed optimism, with Randy Bolt of the Mariposa Gem and Mineral Club telling ABC News that extensive testing has confirmed substantial gold deposits. "They did a lot of core testing and magnetic resonance, all kinds of fancy stuff to prove yes there’s enough gold here."

The Fremont Gold Mine spans over 3,000 acres of privately held land and includes two existing mine shafts, approximately 23 kilometers of underground tunnels, and extensive historical drilling data. The company also suggests an additional 156,000 ounces of gold may exist outside the current resource estimate.

This revival is occurring alongside other mining ventures in the area. Blue Moon Metals announced in 2025 that it had received federal approval for a nearby project to mine zinc, gold, silver, and copper, estimating significant quantities of those metals. Mining operations are subject to stringent regulations and inherent risks, but the substantial increase in gold prices has generated considerable enthusiasm for these endeavors. For some local communities, the potential mining boom represents not only economic opportunity but also a chance to revitalize their towns.
