BYD's Denza Unveils Electric Supercar With Over 1,500 HP
The Denza Z aims to challenge luxury sports car brands with its high performance and rapid charging capabilities.
BYD's Denza sub-brand has introduced the Denza Z, an electric supercar boasting over 1,500 horsepower and aiming to compete with established performance marques like Porsche. The new model is poised to enter the market with pricing expected to range between £150,000 and £180,000.
Denza Z is powered by three electric motors, with two integrated into a 15-in-one drive unit on the rear axle, a claimed world first. This setup delivers a combined output of 1,583 horsepower and 1,260 Nm of torque, enabling acceleration from 0 to 62 mph in approximately two seconds. The 'Racing' variant is capable of reaching a top speed of 217 mph, while the Coupé and Spider models can achieve up to 186 mph. To enhance aerodynamic performance, the car features a carbon-fibre front splitter, rear wing, body vents, and underfloor vortex generators that produce up to 1,060 kg of downforce.
The Denza Z utilizes BYD's 76kWh Blade 2.0 battery. While the power output impacts its range, offering between 236 and 254 miles on a full charge depending on the variant, the vehicle supports BYD's Flash Charging technology. This system allows the battery to charge from 10% to 97% in just nine minutes, or 10% to 70% in five minutes, addressing potential range concerns.
Denza plans to create synthetic engine noises to appeal to customers accustomed to the sound of combustion engines. The interior of the Denza Z features a multi-theme ambient lighting system that adjusts with driving modes. Luxury materials such as suede-effect fabrics, carbon fiber, and metal finishes are used, with ten interior color options available. The cabin is equipped with an 8.8-inch digital instrument panel and a 12.8-inch infotainment system with Google Built-in. It also includes a Devialet theatre-grade sound system and a digital rear-view mirror.
The Denza Z is positioned to compete with models like the Porsche 911, with its estimated price range making it more expensive than an entry-level 911 but less than a 911 GT3. Unlike some limited-production hypercars, the Denza Z is intended for broader production. The Coupé, Spider, and Racing variants are slated for order availability this summer in select markets, with deliveries expected before the end of the year.
