BYD's Denza Brand Unveils Electric Supercar and Land Rover Defender Rival in Europe
The Chinese automaker's luxury sub-brand, Denza, is introducing the high-performance Denza Z and the rugged Bao 5 SUV.
BYD's luxury sub-brand, Denza, is expanding its European presence with the debut of two new models: the Denza Z electric supercar and the Bao 5, a four-wheel-drive SUV positioned as a rival to the Land Rover Defender. Both vehicles are making their European public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
The Denza Z is presented as an "everyday supercar" with a claimed top speed of 217 mph and acceleration from 0 to 62 mph in under two seconds. It is fully electric, powered by three electric motors that produce 1583 bhp and 1260 Nm of torque. The supercar utilizes BYD's Blade 2.0 battery, offering a range of 236 to 254 miles depending on the variant. Denza claims its Flash Charging technology can replenish the battery from 10% to 70% in five minutes, and from 10% to 97% in nine minutes. The interior features luxury materials, ambient lighting, an 8.8-inch digital instrument panel, a 12.8-inch infotainment system with Google Built-in, and a Devialet sound system. Pricing for the Denza Z is expected to range between £150,000 and £180,000, positioning it in the high-performance price bracket.
The Bao 5 is a plug-in hybrid SUV designed to compete in the large, boxy 4x4 segment, with Denza specifically targeting the Land Rover Defender market. The company notes that the UK accounts for over half of European sales in this SUV category. The Bao 5 offers 56 miles of electric-only range and a combined range of 537 miles on a full tank and battery charge. Its plug-in hybrid powertrain delivers nearly 537 bhp, enabling a 0-62 mph time of 5.4 seconds for the vehicle, which weighs over 3000kg. The SUV features 16 driving modes, including specialized options like 'Leopard' and 'Race,' as well as a 'U-turn' mode for enhanced maneuverability. The interior boasts a multi-screen setup, including a 12.3-inch driver display, a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, a head-up display, and a passenger widescreen. It also includes features such as Google Built-in, four-zone voice control, an 18-speaker Devialet audio system, a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front massage seats, heated rear seats, and a 4.5-liter cooled and heated storage compartment. The Bao 5 is available in two trims: Elegance, priced at £69,500, and Ultimate, at £78,880. Orders for the Bao 5 will open this summer, with deliveries scheduled for the final quarter of 2026.
