The Chinese automaker BYD has launched the Dolphin G DM-i in Britain, marking the debut of the UK's first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) supermini. This move comes as PHEV sales in the UK have seen a significant increase, growing by 35% in the past year.

The Dolphin G DM-i is positioned to appeal to consumers looking for cost-effective running expenses, particularly as petrol prices remain high. The vehicle's pricing starts at £23,990, offering an electric-only range of 24.8 miles and a total combined range of 633 miles. An upgraded Boost specification is available for £26,990, providing an extended electric-only range of 65 miles.

BYD, a global leader in battery electric vehicle (BEV) and PHEV sales, is leveraging its manufacturing speed, capable of developing new car models in as little as 18 months. These models support 6.6kW AC charging, reaching 100% in 2.9 hours, and can DC fast charge from 10% to 80% in 26 minutes at 39kW.

Official fuel consumption for the higher trims is rated at 201.7mpg. The pricing structure is as follows: Active at £23,990, Boost at £26,990, Comfort at £28,490, and Sport at £29,490. The Boost trim is recommended for its balance of features and price.
