Bumble Acquired by Ithaca Holdings for $1.2 Billion
Investment firm Ithaca Holdings has purchased the dating app Bumble for £980 million, a move its new owners describe as a 'bet on the future of humanity'.

Dating app Bumble has been acquired by US investment firm Ithaca Holdings in a deal valued at £980 million (approximately $1.2 billion). The new owners stated their investment is a "bet on the future of humanity," emphasizing the enduring need for human connection.
Founded by Whitney Wolfe Herd 12 years ago, Bumble has been a significant player in the online dating market. Wolfe Herd, who also co-founded Tinder, became the world's youngest female billionaire when Bumble went public on the stock market in 2021. She will remain actively involved with Bumble following the acquisition.
In a statement, Ithaca co-chief executives Ravi Gupta and John Hegeman said, "Technology should work in service of our deepest source of fulfillment, human connection, and this investment is a bet on the future of humanity." They added that "People and societies will always need connection, relationships, love, and family, and we are excited to build on Bumble’s legacy and share its mission with the next generation of members."
Bumble's stock saw a significant increase of 57 percent in overnight trading on the Nasdaq following the announcement of the deal. The company is expected to maintain its headquarters in Austin, Texas, with offices remaining in New York City and London.
Launched in 2014, Bumble initially distinguished itself by requiring women to make the first move in heterosexual matches, a feature designed to foster more respectful interactions. While it later adapted to allow all users to initiate conversations, this foundational principle contributed to its unique brand identity.
Bumble also owns the dating app Badoo and the friendship app BFF. The company, along with competitors like Tinder and Hinge (both owned by Match Group), has been facing challenges such as declining user engagement and pressure to integrate new technologies like AI. Bumble's total revenue for the quarter ending June 30, 2026, was reported to be £159 million, a 15 percent decrease.
In response to evolving user expectations and market trends, Bumble has recently introduced AI-powered features, including profile guidance to assist users in creating and improving their dating profiles.
Ithaca Holdings highlighted Bumble's "trusted brand and loyal community" as key assets. "As technology and dating habits evolve, we see huge potential to take it into the next era together, building on the foundation Whitney and the talented Bumble team have built," Gupta and Hegeman stated.
Wolfe Herd reiterated her commitment to the company's mission, stating, "Bumble was founded on a simple belief: meaningful relationships are essential to a healthy, happy life. Today, that belief feels more important than ever." She expressed confidence in Bumble's future and her eagerness to collaborate with the Ithaca team on future innovations.
