More than 411,000 Britons switched their current accounts between July and September 2026, marking the highest volume of transfers since 2023, according to data from the Current Account Switch Service (CASS).
This surge represents a 55% annual increase compared to the same period last year, indicating heightened competition among financial institutions. September alone recorded 152,299 switches, the most active month since November 2022.
Nationwide was the most popular destination for account switchers, followed by Barclays, NatWest, and Monzo. The CASS reports data on provider choices with a three-month delay, meaning the latest provider data reflects switches completed between April and June.
"It's positive to see that thousands of consumers are continuing to switch banking providers in order to find a partner that provides the right mix of benefits, ease of use and customer service which suits their financial needs," said John Dentry, of Pay.UK, the operator of the CASS.
Smooth Switching Process
The Current Account Switch Service ensures that 99% of transfers are completed within the standard seven working days. The service manages the entire process, including redirecting payments and notifying relevant parties of the new account details. During the July to September period, nine in ten customers reported satisfaction with the overall switching experience.
Lure of Incentives
The significant increase in switching activity is largely attributed to attractive offers from banks and building societies. Throughout the summer, several institutions launched substantial cash incentives for new customers. For instance, HSBC offered a £220 switch deal, while First Direct increased its offer from £175 to £200, and later to £210 for switches completed before December 2.
Barclays is currently offering up to £300, structured as an initial payment and subsequent monthly installments for meeting certain debit card usage criteria. Santander provides a £240 incentive for those who switch and deposit £200 into its regular savings account. Lloyds and NatWest are each offering £200, while Nationwide offers £175, with the potential for a future 'Fairer Share' payment, a profit-sharing scheme that paid eligible members £100 in June 2026.
Beyond the Bonus
While financial incentives are a strong motivator, experts advise consumers to consider factors beyond immediate cash rewards when choosing a new bank. Online and mobile app banking functionality emerged as the primary reason for switching, followed by customer service, interest rates, spending benefits, and account fees.
