BrewDog CEO James Taylor Steps Down Just Months After Tilray Brands Acquisition

James Taylor has stepped down as CEO of BrewDog, a mere three months after the Scottish brewing company was acquired by U.S. cannabis giant Tilray Brands for £33 million. Taylor, who was appointed CEO in March of last year, previously served as the company's chief financial officer since November 2023.

His exit continues a trend of leadership changes at BrewDog, with Taylor being the third CEO to depart in just over two years. Prior to Taylor, BrewDog founder James Watt and his successor James Arrow both left their CEO roles within a year of each other.

BrewDog was sold to Tilray Brands in a pre-pack administration deal in March following the company's collapse. The business had been struggling financially, reporting losses of £59 million in 2023 and £30.5 million in 2022. In October of the previous year, the company announced job cuts after a £37 million loss, and nearly 2,000 pubs across Britain had stopped selling its beer in the two years preceding the acquisition.

When BrewDog folded, it left £20 million in unpaid bills to approximately 500 firms and owed £553.8 million at the time of its sale to Tilray. In the aftermath of the acquisition, the company ceased production of its spirits to concentrate on its beer brands, notably the Punk IPA.

Tilray Brands, led by Rajnish Ohri, has stated its intention to rebuild BrewDog into a brand valued at over $1 billion. Since the takeover, Tilray has invested around £50 million to re-establish supply chains and support the workforce, according to Tilray CEO Irwin Simon. Simon also indicated that the company's bar estate will undergo significant cleaning and maintenance. "It's four months into it and I am really happy we acquired this," Simon told The Times. "It's a phenomenal brand, phenomenal assets, phenomenal opportunities."

A spokesperson for BrewDog commented on Taylor's departure, stating, "James successfully led BrewDog through its ownership transition. We thank him for his contributions and wish him every success in the future."

The company is reportedly not seeking a direct replacement for Taylor, as BrewDog now operates under the umbrella of Tilray Brands.

BrewDog's history includes a period of rapid growth in the mid-2010s, driven by demand for craft beers and IPAs. However, the company and its founder, James Watt, faced controversy. Former employees accused Watt of fostering a "culture of fear" and exhibiting "toxic attitudes" towards junior staff. Watt later admitted to being "too intense and demanding" and stepped down as CEO to become "captain and co-founder."
