BP Puts North Sea Business Up for Sale, Ending 60 Years of Production

BP has announced it is placing its North Sea business on the market, a move that would conclude the company's 60-year tenure of production in the region. This decision stems from a comprehensive review of BP's global operations, undertaken as the company seeks to reduce its overall size and scope.

The North Sea operations include five production hubs, with two located in the central North Sea and three to the west of Shetland. Approximately 1,100 employees work within this division.

BP Chief Executive Meg O'Neill stated that the North Sea business would be "better positioned as part of another company." She also affirmed BP's continued commitment to the UK, noting that the country has been the company's home for over a century and will remain important to its future. O'Neill highlighted BP's contributions to the UK economy, job creation, and consistent energy supply.

The potential sale comes amidst discussions about North Sea oil and gas. Prime Minister Andy Burnham recently indicated to U.S. President Donald Trump that he would adopt a "pragmatic approach" to the issue. Increased drilling in the North Sea has received backing from various groups, including President Trump, several trade unions, industry representatives, and some Labour Members of Parliament.
