Bond Market Selloff Worsens Amid Lingering Supply Chain Issues

The rout in the bond market is deepening, exacerbated by ongoing disruptions in the supply chains that transform crude oil into usable fuels. This persistent bottleneck is keeping fuel prices elevated, which in turn is contributing to a brutal selloff in bonds.

While oil tankers have resumed passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global energy trade, the issue is not solely about the transit of crude. The complex process of refining crude oil into gasoline and other products remains under siege. This has created a situation where supply constraints at the refining level are maintaining high prices for finished fuels.

These elevated fuel prices have a ripple effect across the economy, influencing inflation expectations and central bank policy. For the bond market, rising inflation and the prospect of continued interest rate hikes to combat it are particularly damaging. Investors are demanding higher yields to compensate for the eroding purchasing power of their fixed-income investments and the increased risk of holding longer-term debt in an inflationary environment. The combination of these factors has led to a significant decline in bond values, pushing yields higher and deepening the current market downturn.
