Black Milk Clothing Closes Australian Factory, Moves Production to China

Black Milk Clothing has closed its last Australian manufacturing facility in Brisbane, relocating production to China. The decision impacts 15 members of the production team, according to CEO Jackie Kruger.

In a statement on Friday, Kruger described the closure as one of the most difficult decisions the company has made. She indicated that the shift to China was understood to be part of the transition. Previously, the company had publicly stated its intention to continue manufacturing in Brisbane and had worked for years to integrate local and offshore production models.

"The reality for us is that manufacturing in Brisbane is no longer commercially viable in a way that allows us to deliver a range of products into the future and continue investing in the business," Kruger explained. She noted that the company's evolving product strategy now includes increased use of cotton, other natural fibers, and recycled polyester.

Kruger added that many of these newer fabrics and the specialized production capabilities required to work with them are not available at the Brisbane factory. As part of the transition, Black Milk Clothing is enhancing quality control by implementing 100 percent inspection of its offshore production. The company stated it will continue to evaluate new fabrics, construction methods, and product performance to ensure they meet expected standards.
