Binance Reports $6.3 Billion Security Breach
Cryptocurrency exchange says an attacker likely gained access via a compromised laptop, leading to unauthorized withdrawals.

Binance, a major cryptocurrency exchange, has estimated the financial impact of a recent security incident at approximately $6.3 billion. The exchange's initial investigation suggests that an attacker gained access through a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer, which then facilitated unauthorized withdrawal transactions.
In a statement, Binance indicated that it has found no evidence of leaked wallet private keys. The company stated it would release a detailed technical post-mortem after completing its investigation and verifying the findings. Binance has committed to covering all losses incurred from both the SAFU fund and the company's own resources, assuring users that their funds remain safe. An updated Proof of Reserves report will be published following the completion of remediation efforts.
As a precautionary measure, Binance temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while security checks were conducted. The exchange has revoked authorization for the affected address and is collaborating with law enforcement and blockchain intelligence partners to trace and recover the stolen assets. Approximately $3 billion of the affected assets have been frozen on-chain. "Our teams are working around the clock to resolve this issue safely and thoroughly," Binance stated, emphasizing its cooperation with law enforcement to identify and prosecute those responsible.
