Beyond Meat Launches Ultra-Realistic 'Steak Filet' in Major Retailers
The plant-based meat company aims to capture a new segment of the market with a product designed to mimic traditional beef steak.
Beyond Meat has introduced its plant-based 'Beyond Steak Filet' to grocery store shelves at Wegmans on the East Coast and H-E-B stores in Texas. This move represents a significant push to appeal to consumers seeking an ultra-realistic alternative to conventional beef steak.
Wegmans is the sole East Coast brick-and-mortar retailer carrying the product this year, offering a pack of two 4.45-ounce filets for $10.99. Sara Hoffman, Wegmans category merchant, stated that the company continuously expands its plant-based offerings to meet customer needs and that the Beyond Steak Filet aligns with their focus on taste, ingredient quality, and making mealtime easier and more exciting.
The plant-based steak is composed of a blend of ingredients including mycelium, wheat gluten, faba bean protein, and avocado oil. Beet juice extract is used to replicate the appearance of rare beef. According to Beyond Meat, each filet contains 230 calories, 28 grams of protein, three grams of fiber, and one gram of saturated fat, with zero cholesterol. The company also highlights that the product is made without added antibiotics or hormones and is free of genetically modified ingredients, differentiating it from many traditional beef products.
Beyond Meat recommends thawing the filets overnight before pan-searing them for approximately four to four-and-a-half minutes per side, advising against the use of air fryers or microwaves. The product was previously available on restaurant menus, including BOA Steakhouse, and through Beyond Meat's website, where it became one of the company's top-selling items.
Consumer reception has shown mixed reactions. Some early reviews have been positive, with users on platforms like Reddit praising the texture and flavor as being close to traditional steak and noting the ease of cooking. However, some consumers have expressed unease with the product's realistic appearance, particularly the 'bleeding' effect when cut, which some found off-putting.
Beyond Meat's stated goal with the Beyond Steak Filet is to recreate the full steak-eating experience, describing it as tender, juicy, and suitable for classic steak accompaniments, salads, tacos, and grain bowls.
