Beat Generation Icon Lawrence Ferlinghetti's Big Sur Cabin Lists for $2 Million

A 2.61-acre property in Big Sur, California, once owned by Beat Generation poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti, has been listed for sale at $2 million. The secluded parcel is situated within a gated enclave in Bixby Canyon, adjacent to the renowned Bixby Creek Bridge. Ferlinghetti, a significant figure in American literature known for co-founding City Lights Booksellers & Publishers and publishing Allen Ginsberg's "Howl," owned the property before his death in 2021.

The listing highlights the property's natural beauty, including a private residents-only pathway that follows Bixby Creek down to the shoreline beneath the Bixby Bridge. The land features a cleared building site, an existing cabin, a meditation hut, and historic trout ponds. The current owner, Lorenzo Ferlinghetti, Lawrence Ferlinghetti's son, emphasized the abundance of local wildlife and the year-round freshwater creek as key attractions.

Development on the property is subject to Monterey County's stringent Local Coastal Program regulations. While preliminary work has been done for potential residential use, including geotechnical investigations and septic planning, prospective buyers should anticipate a lengthy and potentially costly approval process. The property is located at 39350 Coast Road and was officially listed on June 24.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti, who passed away at 101, was instrumental in establishing First Amendment protections for literary free speech following the 1956 publication of "Howl." He also authored the popular poetry collection "A Coney Island of the Mind."
