Barclays Reverses Course on Branch Closures with Three New Openings

Barclays Bank has announced plans to open three new branches in England this year, signaling a reversal of its extensive branch closure strategy. The new locations in Bishop's Stortford and Poole are slated to open this month, with a third branch in Beverley scheduled for November.

This move marks Barclays as the first major bank in a decade to open new branches, a significant departure from the trend of high street consolidation driven by the rise of digital banking. The bank stated it would "continue to consider opportunities to open further branches in locations where we believe they could make a meaningful difference for customers."

These new branches are not simply replacing previously closed ones. Barclays confirmed that it had previously operated branches in Bishop's Stortford, Poole, and Beverley until 2024, which were shut as part of prior closure programs. The bank explained that the decision to reopen in these areas was based on an analysis of "many points of data and insight."

According to a Barclays spokesman, the openings reflect an approach of "investing in modern spaces, improved self-service technology and face-to-face support where we see a clear customer need." Each new branch is expected to have approximately six staff members, focusing on financial guidance rather than traditional counter services.

This initiative is part of a pledge by Vim Maru, chief executive of Barclays UK, to re-establish a presence in towns and cities. "We are back on the high street, in the communities … this is the first large bank that’s opened a branch in about a decade," Maru stated.

Barclays' decision comes at a time when banks and building societies have closed a substantial number of branches. Consumer group Which? reported that since January 2015, 6,871 branches have closed, representing about 69 percent of those open at the beginning of that year. Barclays itself has closed approximately 80 percent of its branches since 2019, totaling 1,236 closures, according to Which?.

In contrast, Nationwide Building Society has extended its pledge to keep its entire branch network open until at least 2030. Nationwide's chief executive, Debbie Crosbie, previously indicated that the building society might open more branches in areas with a demonstrated "need," following a strategy that she said is paying off as customers value in-person banking services.

Barclays currently operates over 200 full-service branches across the UK. The bank maintains that it regularly reviews its branch network to adapt to changing customer needs and evolving patterns of where people live, work, and shop, balancing in-person services with the growing demand for digital banking.
