Barclays Reverses Closures with Plans to Open Three New Branches

Barclays Bank is set to open three new branches in England, marking a significant reversal of its previous mass closure strategy. The new locations will be in Bishop's Stortford and Poole later this month, with a third branch opening in Beverley in November.

These openings represent the first time in a decade that a major British bank has announced plans to establish new branches. Barclays stated that it will "continue to consider opportunities to open further branches in locations where we believe they could make a meaningful difference for customers." While specific details on future openings remain unannounced, the bank indicated that more information would be shared as plans are confirmed.

Each new branch will be staffed by approximately six employees and will focus on assisting customers with their finances, offering modern spaces, improved self-service technology, and face-to-face support. The decision to open these new branches follows an analysis of various data points and insights, aligning with a pledge by Vim Maru, chief executive of Barclays UK, to reinvest in communities.

Barclays had previously operated branches in Bishop's Stortford, Poole, and Beverley until closing them as part of earlier closure programs. The bank indicated that its physical footprint is continually reviewed to adapt to changing customer behaviors, balancing in-person services with the growing demand for digital banking.

This strategic shift occurs against a backdrop of widespread branch closures across the UK. Consumer group Which? reported that banks and building societies have closed approximately 6,871 branches since January 2015, representing about 69% of the branches open at the start of that year. Barclays itself has closed a substantial number of branches, shutting 1,236 since 2019, which is the highest number among major banks.

In contrast, Nationwide Building Society has committed to keeping its entire branch network open until at least 2030. The building society has also indicated a willingness to explore opening new branches in areas with demonstrated customer need, emphasizing a strategy that appears to be resonating with customers who value in-person banking services.
