Barclays Buys Canary Wharf Headquarters for $750 Million
The acquisition of One Churchill Place signals a strong vote of confidence in London as a global financial hub.
Barclays has purchased its global headquarters at One Churchill Place in London's Canary Wharf for £750 million ($946 million USD). The deal with the current owner, Canary Wharf Group, grants the British bank control of the building beyond the expiration of its lease in 2039.
This acquisition marks one of the largest office building purchases in Europe in recent years and provides Barclays with greater cost certainty and flexibility over its London real estate footprint. The 32-storey skyscraper has served as Barclays' global headquarters since 2005.
"One Churchill Place has been our home and global headquarters for more than two decades," said Barclays chief executive CS Venkatakrishnan. "This acquisition gives us long-term certainty, greater flexibility over our London footprint and reinforces our continued confidence in London as one of the world’s leading global financial centres."
Canary Wharf Group, owned by Brookfield and the Qatar Investment Authority, has been investing in the area to enhance its appeal to tenants. The purchase by Barclays is seen as a significant endorsement of London's status as a major international financial center.
