US private equity firm Bain Capital has acquired British vitamin manufacturer Vitabiotics for approximately $900 million, marking the end of five decades of family ownership for the company.
US private equity firm Bain Capital has acquired British vitamin manufacturer Vitabiotics for approximately £900 million, ending five decades of family ownership for the company. Vitabiotics, known for its Perfectil, Pregnacare, and Wellwoman brands, is the largest vitamins company in the United Kingdom.
The sale represents a significant financial gain for the founding Lalvani family. Tej Lalvani, the company's chief executive and a former investor on the BBC's "Dragons' Den," expressed gratitude for the opportunity to build on his father's vision. Professor Kartar Lalvani, the founder, will assume an honorary role as chairman emeritus.
Bain Capital, headquartered in Boston, has stated that the UK will remain central to the business and indicated no immediate changes to day-to-day operations at the London-based firm. This acquisition follows a trend of US companies acquiring British businesses over the summer.
Bain Capital has previously attempted to acquire British entities, including an unsuccessful bid for the insurance mutual LV in 2021. Interest in Vitabiotics was first reported earlier in the year, with Blackstone also noted as a potential interested party. The sale occurs amid broader concerns about foreign takeovers of British companies.
