B&M Retail Fined £2 Million for Food Hygiene Violations in Birmingham

B&M Retail Ltd has been fined £2 million for serious food hygiene offenses discovered at three of its stores in Birmingham. The company pleaded guilty to the charges at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on July 13.

Inspections conducted by Birmingham City Council's environmental health service between November 2024 and October 2025 revealed mouse droppings and gnawed products on sale at the St Andrew's Retail Park location. Similar mouse infestations were also identified at stores in Priory Square Shopping Centre and The Fort Shopping Park.

The council initiated inspections following several complaints, including one from a member of the public who reported seeing a mouse at the Priory Square store. In addition to the substantial fine, B&M Retail Limited was ordered to pay £18,104 in prosecution costs and a £2,000 victim surcharge. The company has been directed to settle the fine and costs within 28 days.
