Aviation's Window Suppliers Face Scrutiny After Chemical Tank Incident
A manufacturing disruption at GKN Aerospace highlights the vulnerability of the aircraft supply chain due to a limited number of specialized window producers.
A chemical storage tank incident in May at GKN Aerospace's Garden Grove facility, which supplies aircraft windows, has sent ripples through the aviation industry, underscoring the fragility of a supply chain reliant on a few specialized manufacturers. The tank, containing over 7,000 gallons of toxic methyl methacrylate (MMA), began to overheat, prompting the evacuation of over 50,000 residents and a massive cooling effort by fire crews. Though an explosion was averted, the incident has hobbled production at the GKN site.
In August, GKN and local authorities announced a $100 million program to compensate evacuated residents. However, production of aircraft windows at the facility, which had been halted, remains at roughly 50% of normal capacity, according to parent company Melrose Industries. Full restoration of production is anticipated by September 28.
Critical Component in Short Supply
GKN is one of a very small number of companies globally qualified to produce aircraft windows, which are considered safety-critical components. This limited pool of suppliers means that any disruption can significantly impact the entire system.
"They're one of only a handful of suppliers – less than a handful, really – of critical windows," said Marisa Garcia, an aviation industry analyst. "One of the breaking points of supply chain in aviation is you have very few companies qualified to do something and, when something goes wrong, it really upsets the entire system."
Both Boeing and Airbus have acknowledged the situation. A Boeing spokesperson stated the company is "taking steps to mitigate any potential impacts," characterizing the production shortfall as an "industry-wide" issue and affirming support for its supplier. An Airbus spokeswoman indicated they are "closely monitoring and are seeing positive progress toward a return to normal."
This disruption comes at a time of high demand for new aircraft, with airlines struggling to acquire planes quickly enough. Mike Stengel of AeroDynamic Advisory noted that airlines are extending the lifespan of existing fleets, further emphasizing the need for reliable component supply.
Engineering Complexity and Regulation
The high regulatory barriers within the aircraft manufacturing sector make it difficult for new competitors to emerge, according to Stengel. This creates a delicate balance for aircraft manufacturers relying on these specialized firms.
Saint-Gobain Aerospace, another key player in aircraft transparencies, confirmed that its operations do not involve storing or processing MMA, unlike GKN. Instead, Saint-Gobain procures pre-polymerized acrylic sheets.
Jean-Eric Vermont, general manager of Saint-Gobain Aerospace, explained that cabin windows are typically made from acrylic, starting with a shaped sheet. For cockpit windows, glass is chemically reinforced through a process involving ion exchange, creating a stronger, denser material. These windows are also increasingly being manufactured with curves to enhance aerodynamic efficiency, a design choice that adds to manufacturing complexity and requires rigorous testing to eliminate any optical distortions.
All aircraft windows undergo stringent testing to ensure they can withstand impacts, particularly bird strikes, which pose a significant threat to cockpit windows due to the high speeds involved in flight. Saint-Gobain employs simulations and physical tests to assess window resilience against such events. While rare, incidents like a cracked cockpit window can occur, though Saint-Gobain reports no recent involvement of its products in such events.
