Australian Man Spent $1.6 Million After Discovering ATM Glitch
A former bartender detailed his four-month spending spree on private jets and luxury items before confessing and serving jail time.
An Australian man who discovered an ATM glitch that allowed him to withdraw vast sums of money spent $1.6 million in just four months on a lavish lifestyle before confessing to authorities.
Dan Saunders, then 29 and working as a bartender in Wangaratta, Victoria, found the loophole in early 2011. After attempting to transfer $200 from his credit card to his bank account, which held only $3, the ATM transaction failed but the funds appeared. Saunders realized he could exploit a system flaw that occurred nightly during a one-hour network maintenance window.
During the following four months, Saunders indulged in private jets, high-end restaurants, luxury hotels, limousines, and gambling. He also used the money to buy items for his friends, including cars and a horse that cost $50,000. He recounted an anecdote where he told a woman asking if he was the richest man in Australia that he was only seventh.
Despite the extravagant spending, Saunders experienced significant anxiety, fearing he would be caught. He described having nightmares about SWAT teams raiding his home.
Saunders eventually contacted the National Australia Bank (NAB) to admit his actions. Three years after first speaking publicly about his experience, he was arrested. He told SBS Insight that after the bank initially stated they would pursue him, no action was taken, prompting him to go to the media for closure.
Saunders was charged with 111 offenses related to fraud and theft. He served 12 months in jail, which he described as providing much-needed closure. He was also ordered to pay $250,000 in compensation to NAB and sentenced to 18 months of community service.
After his release, Saunders returned to bartending, earning $22 per hour. His story has since inspired the 2024 film 'ATM Boy', and he now works as a public speaker.
In a 2014 interview, Saunders described feeling like a "white Kanye West" while spending the money, stating he had never felt more alive. He told A Current Affair that the NAB card allowed him to be anyone he wanted, go anywhere, and do anything, making him feel like a king.
