Asian Markets Tumble as Tech Stocks Lead Sell-Off

Asian stock markets experienced a significant decline on Friday, with technology shares bearing the brunt of the sell-off as investors grew wary of recent price surges.

Trading on South Korea's Kospi index was temporarily halted due to an 8% drop, triggering a mechanism designed to curb panic selling. The index ultimately closed 5.8% lower. This volatility marks the third halt this week and the fifth this year for the Kospi.

The market downturn follows a sharp drop in Apple shares on Thursday, which fell by 6% after the company announced price increases for its iPads and MacBooks, citing escalating costs for computer chips. Microsoft also saw its shares decline after announcing higher prices for its Xbox gaming consoles due to increased component expenses.

These price hikes have fueled concerns that rising component costs could impact device sales, potentially leading to a slowdown in demand for computer chips. Analysts suggest that the increasing cost of commercializing artificial intelligence (AI) tools is gradually being passed on to consumers.

This trend raises questions about the pace at which demand for AI tools will align with the substantial investments being made in the sector, and whether current tech stock valuations are sustainable. Senior partner David Makaryan of Alpha Pacific Group noted that while the long-term investment case for AI remains strong, investors are becoming more discerning about which companies can justify their market valuations.

Elsewhere in the region, Japan's Nikkei 225 index closed down more than 4%, with shares in the investment giant SoftBank falling by 12.5%. Major indexes in Taiwan and mainland China also registered sharp declines.
