Apple Raises Mac and iPad Prices Amidst AI-Driven Chip Shortage

Apple announced Thursday that it is increasing prices for some of its Mac and iPad models due to a shortage of memory chips, a situation exacerbated by the rapid growth of artificial intelligence data centers. The company cited an "unprecedented challenge" for the consumer electronics industry resulting from the surge in demand for memory and storage components.

"We have never seen a component price increase this much, this quickly," Apple said in a statement. The company indicated that it had previously shielded customers from rising component costs but has now reached a point where price adjustments are necessary.

The entry-level MacBook Neo will now cost $699, an increase from $599. The 512 gigabyte MacBook Air is priced at $1,299, up from $1,099, and the one terabyte MacBook Pro is now $1,999, compared to its previous $1,699 price. For iPads, the 128 gigabyte iPad Air is now $749, an increase from $599, and the 256 gigabyte iPad Pro Wifi has been raised to $1,199 from $999.

Analysts anticipate that iPhone prices may also see an increase later this year. Nabila Popal, an analyst at IDC, suggested that the magnitude of the current price hikes for Macs and iPads indicates that potential iPhone price increases could be substantial, possibly by as much as $200 for the Pro and Pro Max models. "I think the days of $50 price increases are over," Popal stated.

Following the announcement, Apple shares experienced a decline, falling $13.29, or 4.5%, to $279.88 on Thursday afternoon.
