AO World Reports Record Profits Amidst Shift of Customer Service Operations Abroad

AO World has announced plans to relocate a significant portion of its customer service operations overseas, citing increased labor costs in the United Kingdom. The online white goods retailer highlighted an additional £8.5 million in annual expenses stemming from changes in employer National Insurance contributions and a rise in the minimum wage.

These escalating employment costs have prompted the company to outsource its inbound sales operations to South Africa. This move has already generated £2 million in savings and is projected to reduce annual costs by £4 million. While no redundancies have occurred in the UK as a result of this outsourcing, 150 new positions have been established in South Africa that would have otherwise been based in the UK.

AO World intends to continue its international recruitment, anticipating that "the majority of our customer engagement operations being based overseas by the end of the financial year." Chief Executive John Roberts stated that the company faces mounting challenges from government policy, suggesting that the company's record profits were achieved "despite, not because of" these policies.

Financial Performance and Strategy

In a recent update, AO World reported that "targeted pricing" initiatives helped to counteract rising costs, enabling the company to achieve record profits against a backdrop of increased expenditures. The retailer announced a 16.1 percent increase in adjusted pre-tax profits, reaching a record £50.5 million, while revenues climbed 11.4 percent to £1.27 billion for the fiscal year ending March 31.

During the year, AO World attracted over 720,000 new customers, which the company views as "fuel for our flywheel in the future." The AO Membership scheme was also noted as remaining "central" to the company's strategic approach. The firm's profitability was further enhanced by gains in market share across its main product categories and a full-year contribution from musicMagpie, acquired in December 2024.

The group's adjusted profit margin, approximately 4 percent, is moving closer to its medium-term target of 5 percent. The FTSE 250 listed company also committed to returning an additional £20 million to investors through a £10 million special dividend and a new £10 million share buyback program.

Looking ahead, AO World expressed confidence in meeting current market expectations for annual pre-tax profit, which stands at £54.6 million. Richard Hunter, head of markets at Interactive Investor, commented that the company's shares appear undervalued historically, and the near-term outlook suggests the market consensus of a "buy" rating is likely to persist due to growth prospects.

AO World shares saw a decline of 3.69 percent, or 3.54 pence, trading at 92.46 pence on Wednesday morning.
