Aldi UK Chief Executive Giles Hurley has called for greater transparency in supermarket pricing, criticizing what he describes as "phoney bargains" and misleading discount strategies employed by major competitors. Hurley contends that the focus should be on the total cost of a shopping basket rather than the size of advertised discounts.

"When a family sees a product advertised at half price, the starting price must mean something," Hurley stated, aligning himself with Prime Minister Andy Burnham's challenge to "fake 'was' prices, invented reductions and other promotions that make a deal look better than it really is."

He emphasized that the retail sector, particularly during times of economic pressure, relies on trust. Recent reports indicate that consumer worry about food prices is widespread, with a significant portion of households skipping meals due to cost concerns. Against this backdrop, Hurley argues that all supermarkets have a responsibility to keep prices as low as possible.
