Aldi to Open 16 New UK Stores Amid Expansion Drive

Aldi has announced plans to open 16 new stores across the United Kingdom in the coming months as part of a significant investment in its expansion. The new locations include areas such as London's Marble Arch, Port Talbot in Wales, and Wigan in Greater Manchester. Other anticipated openings are in Ashford, Kent; Rayleigh, Essex; and Sudbury, Suffolk.

This expansion is a key component of Aldi's broader strategy to increase its presence in Britain, with the company aiming to operate 1,500 stores nationwide. The supermarket chain currently has over 1,080 stores across the country. The latest announcement follows the recent opening of a new Aldi store in Salford Quays and is supported by a planned £370 million investment in new stores for the current year.

In addition to store growth, Aldi has also focused on its workforce. In February, the company implemented its second wage increase for floor staff since the beginning of the year, aiming to boost its market share. Aldi announced it would pay shop assistants £13.50 per hour starting in April, with staff in London receiving £14.88 per hour. Both rates are subject to increases based on length of service. These wage adjustments were made as competitors like Lidl GB, Waitrose, and Sainsbury's also announced above-inflation pay rises for their staff in February. Aldi stated that the wage hike benefits 28,000 staff and positions its entry-level workers as the highest-paid in the supermarket sector.

Jonathan Neale, managing director of national real estate at Aldi UK, highlighted the company's commitment to making affordable food accessible. "Our £370million investment in new stores this year will help us bring Aldi’s unbeatable value to even more communities, supporting local economies through our industry-leading pay for colleagues," Neale said.

The supermarket landscape in the UK is highly competitive. Data released in May indicated that Lidl had surpassed Morrisons to become Britain's fifth-largest supermarket, holding an 8.6 percent share of the grocery market for the three months leading up to May 17. This compares to Morrisons' 8.3 percent share. Lidl's market share has grown significantly over the past two decades. In contrast, Morrisons has faced challenges retaining shoppers. Lidl plans to open more than 50 new stores within the next 12 months as part of a £600 million investment, which is expected to create nearly 2,000 new jobs. Aldi had previously moved ahead of Morrisons in market ranking in 2022.
