Aldi's Australian Extra Virgin Olive Oil Named a Top Value Pick

Aldi Australia's The Olive Tree Australian Extra Virgin Olive Oil Classic Flavour has been recognized as a top value choice among supermarket offerings, according to recent testing by consumer advocacy group CHOICE. The Australian-made oil was among 30 extra virgin olive oils evaluated for taste and laboratory quality, with the budget-friendly option earning an impressive CHOICE Expert Rating of 78 percent.

Despite prices for extra virgin olive oil rising significantly over the past two years due to poor European harvests and increased production costs, the Aldi product, priced at $13.99 for 750ml, demonstrated that premium quality does not always require a premium price. The oil's tasting notes included 'delicate herbaceous aromas' with hints of tobacco leaf, menthol, and ginger, complemented by a creamy finish. This is not the first time this particular Aldi oil has received accolades from CHOICE, having been recommended in previous testing in 2021 and the current year.

To qualify as 'extra virgin,' olive oil must meet strict international standards for both chemical composition and taste. This classification means the oil is extracted using purely mechanical processes without excessive heat or chemicals, which helps preserve its natural antioxidants and healthy monounsaturated fats. CHOICE utilized International Olive Council-approved laboratory testing and blind sensory analysis to identify defects and confirm the authenticity of the extra virgin label.

Extra virgin olive oil is a staple in the Mediterranean diet, often associated with improved heart health and longevity. Its richness in monounsaturated fats can aid in lowering LDL cholesterol when substituted for saturated fats. Research also suggests regular consumption may contribute to healthier blood pressure, reduced inflammation, and potentially a lower risk of chronic diseases. The nutritional benefits are maximized when choosing genuine extra virgin varieties over more refined oils, as they retain more naturally occurring antioxidants.

Chefs increasingly use extra virgin olive oil throughout the cooking process, from dressing salads and vegetables to finishing pasta dishes and risottos. It is also suitable for roasting vegetables, chicken, fish, and potatoes due to its sufficiently high smoke point for most home cooking temperatures. Many bakers are also substituting butter with olive oil in cakes and muffins to achieve a softer texture.

CHOICE's highest-rated overall oil was Italy's Monini Classico Extra Virgin Olive Oil, which received an Expert Rating of 88 percent. Among Australian producers, Cobram Estate Classic Extra Virgin Olive Oil scored 80 percent, followed by Mount Zero Arbequina Extra Virgin Olive Oil at 79 percent. Woolworths' Spanish Extra Virgin Olive Oil was identified as the cheapest top-performing bottle at $9, or $1.80 per 100ml. However, Aldi's The Olive Tree Australian Extra Virgin Olive Oil proved to be a strong performer for consumers seeking local quality at a more accessible price point.

CHOICE advises consumers to purchase the freshest oil available, looking for a 'harvested on' date when possible, and to store olive oil in a cool, dark place away from heat sources and direct sunlight. Keeping the oil tightly stoppered and consuming it within six months of opening are also recommended practices to maintain its quality.
