Aldi Reports Surge in Ice Cream, Barbecue, and Beer Sales Amid UK Heatwave
The supermarket chain sold over 2.5 million ice cream units in three days as high temperatures and the World Cup drive consumer behavior.
Aldi sold more than 2.5 million units of ice cream in Britain between Monday and Wednesday of this week, as record-breaking hot weather gripped the nation. Sales of ice cream across Aldi shops increased by 144% week-on-week, according to the German supermarket chain.
In addition to ice cream, sales of barbecue staples also saw a significant rise. Aldi reported an 80% increase in sales of smash burgers and quarter pounders compared to the same week a year ago. Approximately 80,000 hot dogs were sold in Aldi shops this week alone.
The ongoing World Cup football tournament has also contributed to increased sales, particularly for beer. Aldi sold 34% more beer in the 24 hours preceding the England versus Ghana match on June 23 compared to the previous week. The supermarket anticipates an even larger spike in beer sales before England's match against Panama.
Julie Ashfield, chief commercial officer at Aldi UK, commented on the sales trends, stating, "When the sun shines in the UK, we absolutely make the most of it." She added, "With soaring temperatures coinciding with the football, shoppers filled their baskets with items designed to bring people together." Ashfield noted that "Brits’ sociable spirit remains strong, with more people choosing to host at home and finding smarter ways to entertain."
Meanwhile, other retailers have also experienced increased demand for cooling solutions. Customers were observed queuing for extended periods outside Lidl stores in attempts to purchase air conditioning units. In Southampton, dozens of people waited for over an hour to buy £149 discount air conditioning units. One Lidl employee reported that these units were "gone in 0.5 seconds," with similar scenes reported at other Lidl branches and widespread stock shortages.
Other retailers reported significant jumps in sales for cooling products. Toolstation noted that sales of air conditioning units were up 220% compared to the previous week, while sales of cooling fans rose by 333% in the last seven days.
