Airport McDonald's Draw Ire Over Sky-High Prices
Tourists report exorbitant costs for fast food at Turkish airports, with a Happy Meal costing over £11.
Travelers passing through major Turkish airports, including Istanbul (IST) and Antalya (AYT), are expressing frustration over steep prices for basic fast food items. Despite Turkey's reputation for offering good value on holidays, popular chains like McDonald's and KFC at transit hubs are charging significantly inflated rates, leading to social media outcry.
Istanbul Airport, which serves an estimated 222,000 passengers daily, has been dubbed the 'world's most expensive airport' for dining. Reports indicate prices such as €17.50 (£15) for a beer, €21.50 (£18.50) for a Big Mac, and €6 (£5) for a single banana.
Antalya Airport, which sees up to 150,000 passengers daily, is also facing scrutiny for its elevated fast-food costs. A McDonald's Happy Meal at Antalya Airport was reported to cost 697 Turkish Lira, equivalent to approximately £11.90. This contrasts sharply with UK Happy Meals, which typically range from £3.79 to £4.29. A single Big Mac was priced at 775 Turkish Lira (£12.40), a McChicken at £11.50, and a Double Big Mac or Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese at £16.
At a neighboring KFC, a sharing bucket of 20 Hot Wings with sides and drinks was priced at £48. Individual items were also costly, with a single Hot Wing at £3.40 and a medium fries at £4.20.
These prices have led some travelers to avoid purchasing food at the airport, with reports of airline food running out on flights as passengers opted to wait and eat on board. While airport dining is generally understood to be more expensive, the rates at these Turkish airports are perceived by many to be extreme, prompting a wave of complaints on platforms like TikTok.
