Airbnb Stock Surges as CEO Brian Chesky Credits AI for Strong Growth

Airbnb's stock experienced a significant increase of over 15% on Friday, following the company's report of one of its strongest growth quarters in recent years. CEO Brian Chesky attributed this success to artificial intelligence, an area he admitted to having previously underestimated.

Chesky indicated that Airbnb plans to increase its investment in AI substantially in 2026. He noted that the considerable costs associated with implementing AI are significantly outweighed by the revenue and productivity gains the company is realizing.

AI is reportedly enhancing Airbnb's ability to attract bookings, simplifying the process for hosts to list and price their properties, and decreasing customer service expenses. The company's second-quarter financial results exceeded analyst expectations, with revenue climbing 17% to $3.1 billion compared to the previous year. Net income rose to $816 million, or $1.03 per share, up from $642 million a year earlier.

Airbnb, which appointed Meta's former head of generative AI, Ahmad Al-Dahle, as its chief technology officer in January, is currently testing AI-powered search functionalities, AI-generated listing suggestions, and AI-driven responses for guest inquiries. The technology is also assisting hosts with listing creation and pricing strategies.

According to Chesky, 45% of guests who interact with Airbnb's AI customer service agent do not require further assistance from a human representative. He also commented on the company's AI strategy, expressing optimism about open-source models for consumer-facing products, though he declined to specify which models Airbnb is utilizing due to competitive concerns. While some demanding tasks are being handled by powerful, costly frontier models, Chesky stated that less powerful models are effectively managing most customer-facing operations.

"We are going to spend a lot more on AI tokens this year than we forecasted," Chesky said. "But that’s great because the ROI is there, and therefore our revenue is much higher."

Chesky credited Al-Dahle for the company's advancements in AI, noting that Airbnb was "maybe middle of the pack in AI" before his arrival. Since Al-Dahle joined, Chesky stated that Airbnb has observed increased demand and supply, alongside more cost-effective customer service.
