Airbnb Rolls Out New Weather Protection Policy for Travelers
Guests can opt-in for coverage that automatically compensates them if rainfall at their destination exceeds a specified threshold.
Airbnb has introduced a new optional insurance product designed to compensate guests for disruptions caused by rain during their stays. The weather protection service automatically monitors rainfall at the listing location and issues a payout if it meets or exceeds a pre-determined daily threshold.
This new feature allows guests to add weather protection at checkout. Once a covered stay begins, there is no need for guests to actively track weather conditions. Rainfall is measured in real-time using independent radar, satellite, and forecast data. If the specified rainfall threshold is met for any given day of the stay, guests can receive a payout ranging from €50 (approximately £42) to €1,000 (approximately £839).
"Rain can cast a shadow over a trip guests have been looking forward to, but it shouldn't define it," said Justin Brouse, Airbnb's director of strategic partnerships for AirCover and insurance. The weather protection is underwritten by Chubb, a global insurance provider.
The service is available to eligible guests residing in Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and Sweden. It covers both domestic and international trips booked through the platform. For guests in Denmark, Poland, and Sweden, this marks the first insurance option to be offered through Airbnb.
This initiative follows a series of other service additions by Airbnb earlier in the year. In the United States, guests can now arrange grocery deliveries through the platform. Additional services available include luggage storage, airport pickups, and car rentals. Globally, Airbnb also offers over 2,500 food and culture experiences.
