Airbnb Bans Chores for Guests, Sparking Host Backlash
New rules prohibit hosts from requiring guests to wash dishes or strip beds, leading to concerns about increased costs and potential messes.

Airbnb has implemented new rules that prohibit hosts from requiring guests to perform certain chores before checking out, a move that has ignited strong criticism from property owners.
The updated policy, set to take effect on November 20, 2026, states that guests should not be asked to wash and put away dishes, though hosts can still request that used dishes be placed in the sink. Similarly, hosts can no longer require guests to strip beds, but they can ask for used towels to be gathered. Additionally, guests are not to be asked to take rubbish off-site, but they may be instructed to separate recyclables into indoor bins. The rules also clarify that while guests should not be asked to avoid using amenities like air conditioning, they can be asked to turn them off when departing.
Airbnb stated that the updated house rules are intended to make them easier to discover and clearer to set, ensuring that host requests remain reasonable and without surprises. A spokesperson for the company noted that while house rules are meant to inform guests of host expectations, the existing rules have been perceived as confusing and difficult to manage.
However, many hosts have expressed significant dissatisfaction with the changes. Concerns have been raised about how these regulations could potentially double cleaning time and increase associated costs for hosts. Some fear that the new policy will encourage guests to leave properties in a mess, potentially leading to issues with pests and unpleasant odors.
"As a cleaner, I can't believe this! I hope guests don't get wind of this. Anyone leaving dirty dishes, empty bottles and bins puts additional strain on cleaners, leaves a smell that has to be aired," one user commented on a host group, adding that guests who leave such messes are often likely to leave the entire property untidy.
Some hosts are contemplating moving their listings to other rental platforms. "I will make a complaint - I cannot expect my cleaner to do dirty dishes - and the cost of cleaners is already too high - if Airbnb persist in this I will take my property off the site," another host stated. Others have declared it is "time to find another letting platform."
A petition has been launched on Change.org titled "Airbnb: Keep self-catering self-catering - let hosts ask guests to wash up!" The petition argues that the new policy is unreasonable and unfair to hosts, fundamentally misunderstanding the nature of self-catering accommodation. As of the report, over 2,900 hosts had signed the petition.
