Air Tanzania to Launch Direct UK Flights to Zanzibar in 2027

Air Tanzania plans to introduce direct flights from the United Kingdom to Zanzibar starting in July 2027, marking the first time the East African nation's flag carrier will offer such a route. The airline intends to operate a minimum of three flights per week, initially flying from London Gatwick to Kilimanjaro International Airport, with onward direct services to Zanzibar.

This initiative is part of a broader fleet expansion program for Air Tanzania, which aims to acquire eight new aircraft over the next five years to accommodate anticipated demand. The introduction of direct flights is expected to significantly enhance Zanzibar's tourism potential for UK travelers.

Currently, reaching Zanzibar from the UK involves flights of approximately 12 hours with at least one stopover. Direct flights from other European cities such as Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and Madrid are already available.

Zanzibar, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Tanzania, is known for its beaches, clear waters, and coral reefs. Its capital, Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a Swahili trading town celebrated for its unique architecture and blend of cultural influences. Other attractions include the Anglican Zanzibar Diocese and the Bwa Mzee Spice Farm, where visitors can learn about and purchase local spices.

While Swahili is the official language, English is commonly spoken in tourist areas, along with Italian, Arabic, and French. The Tanzanian Shilling is the local currency, though U.S. dollars are widely accepted. Current return flights from the UK typically range around £890, with stopovers. Accommodation options on the island are available, with some hotel stays costing as little as £13.50 per night based on double occupancy for a week.

The airline has not yet confirmed the duration or cost of the new direct flights. Travel advisories and specific travel requirements should be checked closer to the launch date.
