AI Investor Leopold Aschenbrenner Places New $400 Million Bet After Fund's Near-Collapse

Leopold Aschenbrenner, the 24-year-old AI investor nicknamed the 'Nostradamus of AI,' has reportedly made a new $400 million investment in an unnamed private company, just days after his hedge fund, Situational Awareness, experienced a significant blow-up. The move signals Aschenbrenner's continued aggressive strategy despite recent financial turbulence.

Situational Awareness was forced to liquidate a substantial portion of its public stock portfolio in July due to margin calls triggered by a sharp decline in semiconductor and infrastructure stocks. Despite this, the fund remains operational and still manages an estimated $10 billion in assets, including a multibillion-dollar stake in AI company Anthropic. The fund experienced approximately a 67% portfolio value loss in July but retains significant year-to-date gains due to strong performance in the first half of the year.

Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI researcher, launched Situational Awareness in early 2024 with a substantial personal investment. His investment thesis, outlined in a June manifesto, predicted an imminent artificial general intelligence (AGI) arrival that would spur unprecedented growth in AI-related infrastructure. This vision attracted significant investor capital, swelling the fund to over $20 billion before the July selloff.

The fund's heavy concentration in AI infrastructure and its use of leverage amplified losses when the market turned. Reports indicate that Goldman Sachs demanded repayment of loans, prompting Aschenbrenner to sell off public holdings. Citadel acquired a majority of these distressed assets, helping Situational Awareness extinguish its leverage and stabilize its remaining positions.

Despite the near-collapse, Situational Awareness retained its private investments, notably its significant stake in Anthropic. This was reportedly made possible by the fund's structure, which includes investor lockup periods preventing immediate withdrawals. This allowed Aschenbrenner to sell liquid assets while preserving illiquid holdings.

Experts have compared the situation to the collapse of Long-Term Capital Management, a hedge fund undone by excessive leverage. Aschenbrenner acknowledged the difficulties, stating in a letter to investors, "We let you down this month." However, the fund's year-to-date net gain remains reportedly around 80% despite the July losses, a figure described as "very, very impressive" by industry experts.

Aschenbrenner's personal financial situation remains undisclosed, making it difficult to ascertain the current size of his net worth. However, his reputation as a bold proponent of AI's potential appears to have weathered the recent storm, albeit diminished.
