AI Investor Leopold Aschenbrenner Makes New $400 Million Bet Amidst Hedge Fund Turmoil
Following a near collapse and a significant asset sale, the investor known as the 'Nostradamus of AI' has placed a substantial new investment in a private company.
Leopold Aschenbrenner, an investor often dubbed the "Nostradamus of AI," has committed $400 million to a private company, a move reported just days after his hedge fund, Situational Awareness, experienced a severe liquidity crisis that nearly led to its collapse. This new investment was placed into a company that his firm had already invested $100 million in last month, according to Bloomberg.
Situational Awareness, which Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI researcher, built into a $45 billion fund by backing artificial intelligence ventures, faced significant margin calls due to a broader pullback in tech stocks. To stabilize the fund, Aschenbrenner agreed to sell substantial holdings in public tech companies to Citadel, the firm led by billionaire Ken Griffin. The proceeds from these sales were used to repay lenders, while Aschenbrenner retained control over stakes in private companies.
As of last Thursday, the value of Situational Awareness's holdings stood at $10 billion, a considerable decrease from its peak. In a message to investors, Aschenbrenner acknowledged the difficulties, stating, "We let you down this month." He emphasized that although a solution was found to protect the fund and its investors, the fund's structure should always allow it to withstand losses and continue operations. "I will make it my mission to ensure that we learn the necessary lessons from this experience," he wrote.
The firm's private investments include stakes in AI company Anthropic and other less widely known firms such as Fluidstack and MatX. The emergency asset sales occurred over the same weekend as Aschenbrenner's wedding in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, which was attended by numerous figures from Silicon Valley.
