AI Hedge Fund Founder's $45 Billion Portfolio Collapses Days Before Wedding

Leopold Aschenbrenner, the 24-year-old founder of the AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness, saw his $45 billion investment portfolio collapse just days before his wedding in Carmel, California. The fund's rapid decline reportedly stemmed from heavy borrowing to finance large bets on artificial intelligence stocks.

Aschenbrenner, a German-born investor, had built a significant portfolio by investing heavily in AI companies and acquiring a substantial private stake in Anthropic. As the market shifted, he attempted to mitigate losses by appealing to major hedge funds and selling billions in holdings, including to Ken Griffin's Citadel, according to The Wall Street Journal.

In a letter to investors, Aschenbrenner stated that he had divested a portion of his public stock holdings and committed to enhancing risk management to improve the fund's resilience. Despite these significant selloffs, Situational Awareness continues to manage assets valued at over $10 billion.

Aschenbrenner's career trajectory was marked by a rapid ascent. He graduated from Columbia University at 19 and later worked at Sam Bankman-Fried's FTX. He joined OpenAI in 2023, contributing to a team focused on artificial superintelligence, but was reportedly dismissed approximately a year later for allegedly leaking confidential information.

Prior to his current challenges, Aschenbrenner gained prominence within the tech community following the publication of his extensive essay, "Situational Awareness: The Decade Ahead." The essay garnered attention from notable figures, including Ivanka Trump, and helped attract significant investment for his firm. Situational Awareness's investment strategy centers on artificial general intelligence and has received backing from prominent tech investors.

Aschenbrenner met his fiancée, Avital Balwit, while both were employed at FTX. Balwit currently serves as chief of staff to the CEO of Anthropic. The convergence of his professional crisis and his upcoming marriage marks a tumultuous period for the young investor.
