AI Firm Anthropic Prepares for Major IPO Amidst Tech Market Volatility

Anthropic, the artificial intelligence company behind the Claude AI system, is preparing for a substantial initial public offering (IPO) potentially valued at $1.5 trillion, with plans to offer up to 20% of its shares to private investors. This move, described as of "monumental importance" to the stock markets, comes at a time of uncertainty for tech stocks, as companies like Amazon, Alphabet, and Intel have recently experienced share price declines.

The AI firm, founded five years ago with a mission to be "helpful, honest and harmless," aims for dominance in the AI sector. CEO Dario Amodei and his sister Daniella, the president, along with other co-founders, are anticipated to see significant personal financial gains from the flotation. The company's IPO prospectus, spanning 335 pages, outlines its ambition while also acknowledging potential risks.

Anthropic is encouraging prospective investors to view their participation beyond a simple transaction, suggesting that investing in the company may be a high-stakes endeavor. Global head of investment at Orbis, Simon Skinner, noted that Anthropic is unique and cannot be assessed by conventional metrics, stating, "This could be an amazing investment, or it could be terrible. You cannot know in advance." Wall Street firm JP Morgan is managing the retail portion of the IPO, and demand from private investors is expected to be high.

Details regarding how UK investors can participate remain undisclosed by platforms like AJ Bell, eToro, Hargreaves Lansdown, and Interactive Investor due to secrecy imposed by US lawyers involved in the IPO. Interested parties are advised to register for email alerts from their investment platforms for updates on share prices and minimum investment requirements.

Anthropic's stock market ticker symbol is expected to be ANT. The company has experienced rapid growth, with its valuation reaching $185 billion by last September. Approximately 300,000 companies globally utilize Claude for various applications, including advertising, marketing, and drug development. While acknowledging competition from Chinese AI firms, Anthropic identifies OpenAI (maker of ChatGPT) and Google Gemini as its primary rivals. Peter Singlehurst, head of private companies at Baillie Gifford, supports Claude's value proposition, stating that customers may pay a premium for models capable of complex reasoning and independent operation.

In the first half of the current year, Anthropic's revenues increased to $16.3 billion, a significant jump from $1.2 billion in the same period last year. The company is heavily investing in "compute" resources, including microchips and data centers, to maximize token sales for its Claude system. Major beneficiaries of this spending include Alphabet, chipmaker Broadcom, and SpaceX, which receives $3.1 billion monthly for data center access. Alphabet and Amazon are also noted as top shareholders in Anthropic.

The company's IPO prospectus details numerous risk factors, with 92 pages dedicated to potential hazards. Concerns include the implications of recursive self-improvement (RSI) technology, where AI systems continuously enhance their effectiveness. The prospectus warns of AI potentially assisting in the development of dangerous weapons and posing "catastrophic or existential risks to humanity." A more immediate concern for investors is the potential for capital flight from existing tech stocks such as Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, and Nvidia, which could depress their market values.

Some investment trusts, including Monks, RIT Capital Partners, HarbourVest Global Private Equity, and Pantheon International, already hold minor stakes in Anthropic. Baillie Gifford US Growth, Schiehallion, and Scottish Mortgage have larger holdings. These trusts also have investments in SpaceX, whose shares have shown volatility since its IPO. Investors are also exploring UK-based AI companies like Sage, Relx, LSEG, Softcat, and Computacenter as potential investments amidst growing scrutiny of Big Tech spending.
