Actress Targeted in $10,500 Car Insurance Scam

A Melbourne actress has described her terrifying experience after becoming the victim of an insurance scam that demanded $10,500 to recover her car. Christie Whelan-Browne was involved in a minor collision when another vehicle backed into her car.

Seeking to file a claim, Whelan-Browne searched for her insurer, AAMI, online. She called a number she found, unaware it was a fake number set up by scammers posing as "AAMI Claim Support." Within a short time, a representative arrived, provided her with a replacement car, and took her vehicle.

When Whelan-Browne contacted AAMI directly to follow up, the insurer stated they had no knowledge of the arranged replacement vehicle. She then re-contacted the number she had originally used, only to be informed that her car had sustained $10,500 in damages, and she would have to pay this amount to get it back.

AAMI has issued warnings about such scams, explaining that third parties can impersonate insurers, often appearing prominently in online search results. These scammers may offer a "free" replacement vehicle and claim to handle repairs, subsequently taking the damaged car.

Victims are often left with no information about their vehicle's whereabouts or the timeline for repairs. They may then be presented with inflated repair costs and be forced to pay out-of-pocket. AAMI advises motorists to verify contact details through official policy documents and to confirm the identity of anyone they speak with after an accident. The insurer also cautions against signing any documents, particularly on electronic devices, as signatures can be misused.

Other individuals have reported similar experiences, having mistakenly called scam numbers found through online searches immediately after accidents. These incidents highlight the need for vigilance when dealing with insurance claims and verifying the legitimacy of contact information.
